Failure to recognize simple words: The failure to recognize simple words is a general mental disability and very distressing. Sometimes this leads to labored reading process and inability to understand what the writer is trying to say. However, with patience and perseverance one can teach such adults to acquire basic reading and comprehension skills. One needs not feel superior, did you understand Kant’s categorical imperative when you read it the first time. You needed to read it over and over again to understand basic principles. In the same way sometimes adults with reading disabilities feel lost and disheartened by their inability to comprehend ordinary words. Impatience drives them deeper into depression and aggravates their learning disability. The failure to remember and recognize words, numbers and dates sometimes interfere with tasks connected to day to day life as well. Filling up a form or reading a magazine or watching a television serial becomes an ordeal.
Disability in Memory and Retention: In severe cases, some people forget or are unable to remember the days of the week, date and even years. Remembering and retaining normal information necessary for day to day living becomes an ordeal and leads to further deterioration.
Comprehension of visual stimuli: Normal people recognize patterns in the information they receive through their sensory organs, people with learning disability are unable to recognize the patterns. For us the information we receive is connected through our sensory organs is connected to the previous memory that enables us to make sense of and understand what is going on around us. People with learning problems are unable to connect the sensory stimuli to the information stored in the memory, e.g. they are unable to understand the facial expression, frowns, or smile.
